Objective
Automotive industry is committed to the Voluntary agreement on CO2 emissions reduction and will be subjected to the EU Directive on End of Life Vehicles. Use of lightweight materials is one of the promising solutions to meet the CO2 emission reduction target. Lightweight design options will also have met the recycling targets. These issues have to be investigated using a holistic approach in order to avoid omission or shifting of potential environmental impacts from a product life cycle phase to another. LIRECAR aims at assessing the environmental impacts of lightweight materials all through their life cycle. Study will be based on Life Cycle Assessment methodology following the ISO 1404X standards. Results will consist of an analysis of the strong and weak points of lightweight design scenarios and guidelines for better integration of environmental aspects in car design phase.
