Driveability development of downsized, highly turbocharged gasoline engines (GET-DRIVE)

Objective

Downsized, highly turbocharged gasoline (DHTG) engines offer potential for significant CO2 emissions reduction in automotive applications, however the benefits from this technology will only be realised if vehicles featuring this new technology are attractive to customers. Particular issues for DHTG vehicles are the definition of control strategies/calibration for the complex systems employed, and methods for improving low speed torque delivery. If these issues are not successfully addressed, the driveability of vehicles featuring this technology will be significantly worse than current production vehicles, and hence customer uptake will be slow. The GET-DRIVE project aims to address these issues and deliver the tools and techniques required to deliver customer acceptable driveability in DHTG vehicles.
