Objective
FPEC (Free Piston Energy Converter) is a European RTD project, part of the specific programme 'Competitive and Sustainable Growth'. Its key action is 'Land transport and marine technologies', the main objective being 'Critical technologies for road and rail transport' and the research target being 'Efficient, clean and intelligent road and rail transport vehicle technologies'. The project is aiming to develop a clean and efficient new technology suitable for vehicle propulsion. The technology is based on the free piston principle and comprises a combustion system running on diesel fuel and a non-conventional electric generator for the conversion of mechanical energy into electrical energy. The project consortium consists of two engine developers, one electrical component supplier, one engille manufacturer, three universities and one research institute representing 4 different European countries.
