Smoke emissions reduction in marine engines

Objetivo

Operation of ships in or near harbours often results in engine transients. For marine diesel engines this invariably produces increased smoke emissions because of air/fuel mismatch. The project intends to develop two techniques, namely:
a) compressed air blast to provide extra air and accelerate the turbocharger
b) advanced variable geometry pulse turbo charging which when used in tandem with appropriate control on a marine diesel engine will result in smoke emissions below the visible limit for all engine operating conditions.

Shipboard measurements will provide technical engine transient loading profiles and baseline smoke emissions. The two techniques will be individually developed and then installed on a testbed marine engine for evaluating the performance of each one as well as of their combinations.
