Prediction of leading edge and tip flow for the design of quiet and efficient screw propellers

Objetivo

Quiet and efficient propulsion is essential for modern ships, especially for the high-tech segment of shipbuilding in Europe. Vibrations and noise are major problem areas for ships like cruise ships, ferries and containerships. Measures to reduce vibrations have led to a strong tip loading, with the result that the tip vortex is now the remaining major cause of vibrations and noise. Industry has no tools to predict the strength of the tip vortex. Numerical methods (CFD) have created new possibilities to predict the tip vortex, but these methods have not yet been applied and validated. Moreover, industry lacks the necessary skills to apply CFD. The aim of the project is to develop numerical tools to predict the strength and structure of the tip vortex of a ship propeller, to validate the technique and to bring the technique to industry as a practical tool for the assessment of propeller induced vibrations.
