Objective PACSCAT proposes to develop and validate a novel vessel design for high-speed freight transport along inland waterways. This design concept offers environmental benefits of high efficiency and low wash, allowing a potential doubling of speed. The technical and market feasibilities have been confirmed through testing and analysis under a successful EU CRAFT Exploratory project completed in May 2001. The collaborative RTD project now proposed will perform a detailed design and performance assessment for a vessel suitable for deployment in the Rhine and Danube freight logistics market. It will be implemented by a trans-national consortium spanning the complete value chain from vessel designer to operator, and including interfaces with key regulatory authorities.
