European research area application in the maritime domain (ERAMAR)

Objective

The European Maritime Industry has developed an R&D Master Plan for the technology areas of the Maritime Transport Chain and the Maritime Resources. The Master Plan was used by the industry to initiate various Thematic Networks which have served as launching platforms for over 130 project proposals within the first and second call of FP5. These projects have served well current & short term technological needs in some areas of the maritime spectrum leaving other areas "uncovered" while limited synergy with national research and linkage with medium & long term market and society needs & requirements was obtained. Recognising these matters and in view of the ongoing process towards FP6 COREDES, the R&D shipbuilding forum launched an initiative to regroup the maritime R&D community by means of the "umbrella" Thematic Network ERAMAR and start its own process of identifying its medium & long term R&D actions within an updated R&D Master Plan. To obtain sufficient critical mass all maritime Tn's under FP4/5 will be included in ERAMAR. ERAMAR will also evaluate and consolidate current R&D achievements, disseminate results, strive for enhancing industry's awareness towards joint R&D, for more synergy with national and other EU programmes and for more coherence between technology areas. De facto ERAMAR will initiate the forming of a European Maritime Research Area.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)
