The development of a nondestructive and predictive test method for the fatigue behaviour of bicycle safety parts

Objectif

Abstract Safety and reliability of vehicles for public transportation is an important issue in the European Community. Although, aeroplanes, automobiles and motorbikes are designed and extensively tested to endure various loads over long life spans, the situation for bicycles is unfortunately quite modest Therefore, several national standardisation institutes offices have taken the initiative to define and lay-down a European standard for bicycle requirements and test methods. In view of the forthcoming European standard, bmd Holland (producer of test machinery on safety testing) and sintema forks (producer of front forks) have taken the initiative to develop an on line non-destructive and predictive test method (and prototype) for (quality verification of) bicycle parts. The industrial target for the bicycle industry is to guarantee the reliability and safety of their products by being able to provide quality certificates on their products and to prevent product liability claims. The social target is to reduce casualties caused by fatigue failure occurrence of bicycle parts to virtually zero. The objectives of the project refer to the rtd priorities: 6.1 and 6.2 of key action 3 of the 5th fp.
