Development of a new type of copper-nickel heatexchangers for seagoing vessels

Objective

In shipping industry there is a permanent need for bigger and faster ships, with bigger combustion engines and bigger heat exchangers for cooling the water. The heat transfer takes place by means of convection. The hot cooling water runs inside a system of water pipes and the cold seawater runs outside the pipes. Heat transfer takes place because of the differences of temperature in- and outside the pipes. The use of the present box cooling systems is restricted by the growth of alga at the pipes, sensibility for galvanic corrosion, cooling capacity in relation to the need internal space inside the ships. Until now these systems are to apply on ships with a maximum power of 20.000 kW. The objective of the project is to set up Co-operative Research in order to develop a new box cooling system with spirals welded at copper-nickel pipes, with larger cooling surface, protection with a guarantee for a long life. Such a cooling system is very competitive on the world market.
