Objective
The targets set within the ELV Directive require that recycling of cars must be increased from the present 75% to 85% (by weight) as per January 2005. The car dismantling industry at present is not set up to deal with the electronics, plastics and windscreen waste that must be reclaimed, re-used or recycled under the forthcoming European Union End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) Directive, and also under tightening landfill restrictions. The current 25% not being recycled is being dumped on landfill. This project is proposed to develop appropriate technologies to separate and track waste from different types of materials from end-of-life vehicles. An important requirement is to collect a pure and clean fraction of all separated materials as to obtain truly valuable reclaim.
