European project for improvement of supersonic transport low speed efficiency

Objective

Compliance with Community noise regulations is a critical design requirement of a second generation Supersonic Commercial Transport (SCT). EPISTLE aims to achieve an aerodynamic design methodology that yields SCT configurations with largely attached flow at the low-speed design points and thus realise considerable reductions in drag. This will in turn reduce airport noise levels. The objectives will be obtained by exploring the major design sensitivities of high- lift devices with numerical simulations, by establishing design rules and assessing various optimisation approaches. The numerical design approach will be validated with high-quality wind tunnel experiments. The resulting design methodology for swept SCT wings and the experimental database will yield reduced design turn-around times and improved overall SCT performance. The results will reduce the high industrial risk in SCT development.
