Objective
Fuel-efficient aero-engines must be developed in the future in order to reduce the environmental damage produced by ever increasing airline traffic. The desired savings in specific fuel consumption and reduction of CO2 by 20% in 10 years however must not be achieved at the expense of increasing NOx emissions. With currently existing technology, the only concept capable of fulfilling simultaneous reductions of both CO2 and NOx is the aero-engines concept of an Intercooled Recuperative Aeroengine (IRA). A key component of this type of propulsion is the exhaust gas recuperator (hex). The primary goal of the present proposal is to develop a realistic design concept of a hex for application in the IRA with regard to efficiency, operational life weight and cost. A complete design and construction process will be carried out, manufacturing aspects will be considered, and flow investigations necessary to determine the optimum hex arrangement will be undertaken. The resultant hex will enable a realistic assessment of the benefits of an IRA-engine in terms of CO2 and NOx reduction. Based on the design developed in this project, a hex matrix element for the EEFA-LSIP project will be manufactured.
