Objective
This project aims to achieve advances in the critical technology area of aircraft engine design, in particular in engine rotor dynamics. By improvements to engine dynamics models and their validation, the work will contribute to solutions of the rotor dynamics problems which are met throughout an engine project's life, from the design stage, where the need is to predict fan blade off loads accurately to produce safe yet lighter, more efficient engines, through the development stage, where more rapid resolution of problems will contribute to reduced time to market, and finally in production and maintenance where reduction of costs will be achieved. Importantly, the work will investigate the rotor dynamics of the post fan blade off windmill condition, where there remains a safety concern that the full range of possible engine rotor dynamic behaviour has not yet been defined. It is expected that the project will raise competitiveness of the European industry by achieving reduced weight of the engine and its installation, by up to 100 kg for an aircraft, by enabling reduced time to market for both the aircraft and its engines (engine design/development time reduced by up to 3 months, i.e. 8%) and the cost of rectifying build faults on engine pass-off testing will be reduced by up to 30%.
