Objective
The present S-Wake project aims to develop and apply tools for assessing appropriate (safe) wake vortex separation distances. There are two reasons for addressing the wake vortex safety issue in S-Wake. The first reason is that Airbus Industries (and Boeing) are planning the construction of a new very large transport aircraft, which potentially introduces a larger hazard for following aircraft than existing large aircraft. Secondly, with the present wake vortex separation rules, the major airports in Europe become increasingly congested. The S-Wake project addresses these issues by investigating the levels of wake vortex safety behind the projected new aircraft and by developing and applying a safety assessment methodology, based on a probabilistic approach. A large database with quantitative data for wake vortex encounters (based on one year Flight-Data-Recording data for aircraft arriving at a major European airport) will be collected and analysed for validating essential part of the S-Wake project.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
