Manufacturing and modelling of fabricated structural components

Objective

The European aerospace industry is one of the Community's leading industrial strengths, competing successfully in world markets and ensuring the employment of some hundred thousand persons across Member States. The proposed project seeks to enable a step change in the process of design and manufacture of aero-engine structures, leading to significant reductions in lead-time, materials use, and cost. The project will address the commercial risk whenever a large number of new technologies are required to complete a project; this has been the main reason why fabrication of structural components has been under-developed. The development of a robust design for manufacture methodologies and establishment of alternative manufacturing and fabrication process will facilitate the production of components within the EU and obviate the requirement for costly imports. Improved design and manufacturing processes will reduce both the total weight of the component, and the waste resulting from reduced scrap and rework. Such approaches will yield both cost and environmental benefit.
