Automation for drilling, fastening, assembly, systems integration, and tooling

Objective

In aircraft assembly, component joint quality is dependent on the performance and positional capability of drilling and fastening systems, as well as the integrity of support tooling. High-quality joining has always been time-consuming, labour- intensive, and required expensive tooling. Automation can achieve significant reductions in cycle times and labour costs. There are, however, major limitations - high precision automated equipment is costly, whole preparation still requires many operations, and fastening systems are product-specific. This project aims to develop the technology to make automation affordable. Project outputs will be innovative orbital drilling equipment to replace many existing operations, a new fastening system with improved control, novel low-cost reconfigurable tooling, and advanced machine control using high-precision metrology systems.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
