Network architecture and technologies for airborne communication of internet high bandwith application (NATACHA)

Objective

NATACHA focuses on an airborne system to provide a new generation mobile real-time internet communication to users on board aircraft in-flight. The communication link interfaces to bi-directional high bandwidth satellites. Today's air traveler's communication means are still very limited on-board the aircraft. Demonstrations of experimental airline systems use Wide Area Networks, or Wireless Local Area Networks while the aircraft is on ground, or Inmarsat narrow band systems during flight. These do not support the high data rate needed for today's mobile information technology applications. This major gap is filled by NATACHA providing a combination of true aircraft mobility and true broadband. The novel airborne in-vehicle platform, combined with broadband satellites supports a new mobile Internet for the traveler .
