Low-cost all-polymer integrated circuits for low-end high-volume identification applications (PLASTRONIX)

Objetivo

There is a need for contactless readable electronic barcodes for identification and product tagging. The applications range from electronic article surveillance, identification tags for retail, anti counterfeit devices to access control, airline luggage tracking and recycling. Present transponders made with regular ICs are too expensive. A cost price reduction by an order of magnitude is required. Polymers are associated with low-cost due to their ease of processing. Recently, the first all-polymer integrated circuits and functional transponders have been realized. Apart from low-cost they offer considerable environmental advantages. The target of this 2 year research project is to design and control a manufacturing process for the polymeric semiconductor, and to develop an industrial process technology for flexible polymeric integrated circuits. This project will open the new emerging field of polymer electronics.
- A reproducible process technology for all-polymer integrated circuits has been developed with acceptable process windows. The process is based on patterned films of polyaniline and photochemical via's .The process is based on a 150-mm batch technology. The technology is IC compatible. The technology could be demonstrated with high performance 15-bit polymeric code generators. The operational and shelf life time of the devices, at ambient conditions, are hours and months respectively;
- The synthesis of the Wessling monomer could be scaled up to batches of 300 gram. Batches for the precursor PTV polymer could be delivered to the partners in sufficient amounts to test the new 150-mm IC line. The manufacture on a still larger scale is hampered by the physical form of the polymer, which is not yet not suitable for industry standard vessels and filtration equipment;
- Photo-lithographic patterning of poly-(3,4-ethylenedioxy)-thiophene thin films with a minimum feature size of 5 µm, with the possibility of downscaling, and with sheet resistances of 10 3 and 10 14 Ohm/square has been realized. The technology could be demonstrated with functional 7-stage ring oscillators;
- As demonstrators we realizated all-polymer 15 bit code generators operating at 50 kHz with a bit rate of 0.1 kbit/s. A 48 bit code generator requires further optimization, current results do not allow a demonstration of a capacitively coupled transponder;
- We demonstrated that 4096 solution-processed transistors can be integrated into a 2-inch active matrix. When combined with polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC), this gives a reflective, low power display with paper like contrast. The display can handle 256 grey levels while refreshed at video speed using line by line addressing. This is a major step towards electronic paper. This result has been published as a joint paper in Nature.
