Objective
The central theme of the research is the development of new coating techniques for the protection of steel against corrosion. The coatings are based on specifically designed silica materials to be applied on steel or on zinc pretreated steels. A major benefit will be the use of theses coatings as substitutes for environmentally unfriendly chromate passivation films. The research will divide between practical work, including fabrication of the silica materials and deposition of protecting layers, and fundamental investigations in view of a basic comprehension of the silica induced protection mechanism. The programme includes the participation of industries interested in the application and the benefits of the research.
