Self-assembling and self-healing electronic devices based on mesomorphic discotic materials

Objective

Most optoelectronic devices rely on inorganic semiconductors. Organic semiconductors, principally conjugated polymers (CP), have the advantages, over their inorganic counterparts, of easier processing methods leading to lower fabrication costs of electronic devices. Potential applications of existing organic semiconductors are limited by their current low performances. Our problem solving approach is to replace CP by functional discotic liquid crystalline (LC) materials. Indeed, recent studies have shown that they exhibit significantly improved semi conducting properties. This should pave the way to more efficient devices, such as: solar cells, light-emitting display, and field effect transistors.
