Extending the life span of orthopaedic implants: development of ceramic hip and knee prostheses with improved zirconia toughned alumina nanocomposites

Objective

Lifetime of artificial hips and knees is a serious limitation to their use, especially in relativity young and active people. The introduction of ceramics like alumina and zirconia drastically reduce the wear rate, but fracture rates of up to 1.6 % have been reported for alumina-alumina pairs due to its brittleness Additionally, problems related with the steam sterilization and hydrothermal degradation make that a zirconia-zirconia combination must be avoided. The aim of this project is to increase the life span of ceramic-ceramic knee and hip orthopedic implants to 30 years by using a zirconium toughened alumina ceramic nanocomposite with a clearly improved suitability. This material is obtained by means of a new and innovative processing technology using power / alcoxide mixtures and a pressure Casting forming technique (patent pending).

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Keywords

Project’s keywords as indicated by the project coordinator. Not to be confused with the EuroSciVoc taxonomy (Fields of science)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
