Objective
This project will develop the required technology to produce demonstrator components from a novel lightweight stainless steel. Advanced powder metallurgy and near net shape forging techniques will be used to control the distribution of ceramic particles within a stainless steel matrix. This in turn will allow the production of components that exhibit a unique combination of physical and mechanical properties. A high strength and stiffness, will be combined with a reduced density and improved resistance to corrosion and wear. Advanced joining and machining techniques will also be developed. The project will provide the European aerospace and automotive industries with a significant technological advantage. Support will also be given to EU policies in transport, employment, economics and finance. The consortium comprises of 8 partners from 4 EU countries.
