Objective
Significant improvement and rationalization of current production processes and, at the same time, elimination or substantial reduction of the amount of "flood" lubricants will be provided by new multifunctional, self-lubricating coatings. In mechanical metal treatment or in tribological interactions of moving mechanical components in high-stress applications, lubricants together with toxic additives also endanger the workforce e.g. by vapor inhalation, and are problematic in waste management. The approach to overcoming these problems is by designing and developing new, nanocomposite coatings consisting of a metastable hard matrix incorporating homogeneously-distributed nanoclusters of a solid lubricant (C or MoS2) and deposited by PVD methods. A newly developed composite target representing a final optimized mixture of hard and soft materials will lead to a cost-competitive industrial application of this PVD-coating process.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
