Objective
Rotating cutting tools manufactured from new grades of thermally improved revolutionary steels (HRC 65 at 700 deg C) will be investigated in dry, high speed cutting of aluminum and titanium alloys used in the automotive and aeronautical industry aiming a performance profile comparable with cemented carbide tools. Pulsed plasma nitriding, rare earth containing TiA1N PVD hard coatings and friction reducing PVD top coats (MoS2, WS2, a-me-carbon) will improve the cutting performance. Extensive field trials will be conducted in the automotive and aeronautical industry. The new HSS will have a headline price of only 20% of the carbide alternative and being considerably easier and cheaper to recycle.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
