Smart nox abatement systems for next-generation environmental technologies

Objective

The project relates to new advanced smart materials characterized by a self- tunable and adaptive activity to be applied as novel catalytic devices for the removal of NOx in car exhaust emissions containing oxygen (lean burn and diesel engines ) and novel highly sensitive NOx sensors able to operate with oxygen concentrations up to 20%. The main objectives are to (i) reach a NOx reduction higher than 50% in the presence of oxygen, (ii) develop NOx sensors which can detect NOx in concentrations lower than 100 ppm even in the presence of O2, (iii) demonstrate the techno-economical feasibility and advantages of combining and integrate NOx sensors and catalysts controlled and promoted by non-faraidic electrochemical effect, and (iv) show the feasibility of developing smart catalytic device for a range of different applications.
