Objectif
Innovative polypropylene nanocomposites will be developed for automotive and electronics applications. Nanocomposites will be prepared by exfoliation of modified nanometer-thick clay platelets in both virgin and modified polypropylenes. Innovative, environmentally-friendly and cost-effective synthesis and processing methods will be utilized to engineer mutual compatibility between the inorganic clays and the organic polymers. The nanocomposites will possess improved mechanical and thermal properties and will be suitable to replace materials such as metals and rigid-PVC. The developed materials will be inherently flame-retardant and will reduce the need for hazardous flame retardant additives. The use of nanocomposites in automotive parts will reduce fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. Halogen-free housings with reduced flammability for the electronics sector will contribute to consumer safety.
