Low energy cure laminates for high energy absorption applications in sports goods and other safety critical areas

Objective

Conventional polyester and phenolic laminates provide affordable composites products but have low impact resistance. Advanced aerospace epoxy based composites show dramatic impact resistance under high profile crashes such as occur in F1 racing but are too costly to purchase and process for general use. The proposed project will develop toughened laminate materials and low cost construction technology to enable specialist SME designers and molders to produce the next generation products with improved crashworthiness at a competitive price. Innovation in solvent free matrices and novel reinforcements will eliminate the need for slow, high capital cost autoclave processing and costly tooling.
