Objective
A completely innovative class of materials to protect machining and cutting tools will be developed in the course of the Project. The proposal is a market driven as only 40% of all the machining tools in Europe are wear protected, and the market requires novel technologies to satisfy the consumer's demand with respect to qaulity and endurance. It is worthwhile to underscore that the European industries spent over 7 billion EURO on coolants to be used while machining. The coolants represent threat to environment being very toxic. Unfortunately, hithero used coating technologies produce wear resistant coatings that are poorly compatible with the substrates. This leads to poor endurance and often replacements of the tools. The technology that will be developed in the course of the Project will produce significantly improved wear and oxidation resistant coatings, thus better responding to SME needs. Besides that it will largely reduce the use of toxic coolants.
