Arc-and laser weld brazing of (cold rolled) stainless steel.

Objective

A new group of stainless steels seems to be very promising for especially transportation applications, the so called "Cold Rolled" stainless steels. One of the extra advantages of these steels is that they are relatively cheap and the strength can be varied by the amount of cold deformation. Because of the welding process the positive aspects of stainless steel are decreased, and therefore the potential range of applications stays limited. The recently development so called "braze welding-techniques" can be the solution to the problem. Nevertheless there are major technical shortcomings within these braze welding techniques before they are applicable for Stainless Steel. The technical objective is: Realization of Arc- and Laser braze welding for (cold rolled) Stainless Steel by developing : new braze wires for MIG and TIG brazing, new powders for Laser Brazing and Plasma Powder Arc Brazing and a optimized production process (including modification/innovation of equipment). The eco-nomical objective is: Strengthening the competitiveness of manufacturers of constructions and equipment in stainless steel, creating new market opportunities in Stainless Steel product applications (increase of 20%), reducing the production costs related to Stainless Steel welding (10-30%) and increasing the productivity (10-20%).
