Objective
Aluminium Metal Matrix Composite (Al-MMC) extruded products will be produced using novel concepts in billet manufacture, by casting methods, followed by extrusion under careful process control. Improved die design and surface treatment will play an important role in the economic production of high quality composites with excellent structures and properties. The extruded sections are expected to have higher stiffness and greater wear resistance than the equivalent aluminium alloys, whilst being of a significantly lower cost than existing Al-MMCs. The material will be supplied and extruded by SME companies, who wish to increase their market share, and used by SME companies hoping to developing new applications in the transport, building, recreational and electrical industries. The enhanced properties and extended service life of these composites will also enable the replacement of existing aluminium extrusions in many applications on economic grounds.
