Active screen plasma surface engineering of austenitic stainless steel components

Objective

There is a major requirement in many sectors of manufacturing industry to significantly improve the wear resistance of austenitic stainless steels. Conventional nitrating technologies can achieve this required improvement in wear resistance but only at the expense of a serious loss in corrosion resistance. It is foreseen that this problem could be overcome by a novel "active screen" low temperature plasma carburising process. The technology appears to be particularly attractive not only for wrought components but also for investment cast or cast and HIPped austenitic stainless components for specific applications, including human implants, sophisticated security devices, hydraulics, valves, etc. Unlike conventional glow discharge plasma technology "active screen" processing generates the mass transfer species away from the components and thus has the potential for accurate process control by optical emission methods.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
