Objetivo
An environmentally friendly novel biodegradable polyurethane foam-filled corrugated cardboard board is advanced as a replacement for MDF , chipboard, gypsum and polymer based boards. The proposed non-trivial processing route has considerable technical risk, has significant environmental benefits, and will use recycled waste paper and polyols derived from, for example rapeseed oils. The desired water blown foam, which currently does not exist in the market place, is a perceived R and D risk as the resin has to maintain sufficiently low viscosities to flow and fill the multiple channels and to expand and cure to yield a void free high strength structure. The engineering solution to deliver the foam has to address the changing physical parameters of the resin and is likely to involve development of vacuum and needle injection routes. The key benefits include lightness, strength, heat and sound insulating properties. The product adds value to recycled waste paper fibers and opens options to disposal via biodegradation routes.
