Rare earth alloy and magnet processing

Objetivo

Rare-earth alloys are the basis of all advanced permanent magnets (2B world market) as wells as serving in magnetostrictive and magneto optic functional devices. The applicant has led the Applied Alloy Chemistry Group at The University of Birmingham for the past 20 years, and is acknowledged as one of the leading world experts in processing these materials. He has developed hydrogen processing routes, rotary forging and other novel alloy powder techniques. He is also a leader in hydrogen energy storage research. During a 12 month sabbatical at the Physics Department in Trinity College Dublin, where intrinsic magnetic properties and applications of these alloys have been studied for many years, Prof. Rex Harris will transfer some of his knowledge of gas processing technology and powder metallurgy in order to develop this aspect of materials research in Ireland.
