Objective
In order to protect human health, the authorisation of several antibiotics (avoparcine, bacitracin-zinc, spiramycin, tylosin and virginiamycin) and growth promoters (carbadox and olaquindox) as feed additives has been withdrawn. Available methods of analysis are not suited for control of illegal use. The main objective is to develop and validate adequate multi-methods for the detection of the banned substances at sub-additive levels in feed.
The following techniques will be studied: microbiol inhibition, high voltage electrophoresis, TLC, HPLC and LC-MS. The output will be a control strategy consisting of fully validated screening and confirmatory multi-methods. The second objective is to create a bank of reference standards of the banned substances with guaranteed stability for 10 years. Sufficient amounts will be stored to provide the official control laboratories in the EU member states with the material for at least 10 years.
