Certified reference materials for depth sensing indentation instruments

Objective

The objective of the proposal is to carry out a feasibility study to develop certified reference materials for calibration of depth sensing indenters. The proposal is in response to Dedicated Call Topic II.20. The work plans involves a review to identify candidate materials, followed by a scoping study with a shortlist of materials. The most promising materials are then studied with respect to surface stability and within sample homogeneity, after which a further selection of likely materials is made. At this point sample to sample and batch to batch variability is established, and the CRM validated against directly calibrated instruments. Finally a methodology is developed for the use of the CRMs.
