Novel high temperature metal-carbon eutectic fixed points for radiation thermometry, radiometry and thermocouples (HIMERT)

Objective

Many industrial processes (for example iron and steel, non-ferrous metal processing, carbon composite manufacture, semiconductor manufacturer, motor industry) require accurate high temperature contact and non-contact thermometry. Currently, this is severely restricted by the lack of fixed points above the copper point. This can result in large, unquantified errors in thermometry leading to reduced product quality, increased batch rejection with consequent increase in waste. This project will develop a completely new measurement/test method, based around novel metal-carbon eutectics, providing greatly improved measurement reliability for industry. In addition the project will significantly improve traceability of International Temperature Scale of 1990 (ITS-90) to industry and provide a new method for demonstrating scale equivalence between National Measurement Institutes (NMIs) and accredited laboratories.
