Objective
This work aims to develop a draft standard of a test method to assess the durability of adhesively bonded joints in automobile applications. The work is appropriate for steel and aluminium substrates. The work centres on a fracture mechanics approach to assess resistance to cracking. The approach uses the reinforced double cantilever beam specimens and an innovative test apparatus to impose fatigue loads under environmental conditions. The work will comprise of a pre-normative investigation to identify the key factors influencing this test. Two round robins are then planned to develop the test method for immediate use by EUCAR and then be proposed to CEN for development into a European standard. The work will result in safer more cost effective design of lightweight vehicles leading to lower emissions.
