Objective
The fruit juice market is an important and growing sector of the European food industry. Problems of fruit juice fraud negatively influence market growth as damage consumer confidence. The project will address the detection and prevention of fruit juice adulteration by developing a number of specific methods based on stable isotope analyses, on the one hand, and high performance chromatography, on the other. A European consortium of major analytical laboratories from six different Member States will target specific authentication issues such as detection of added sugar, added acid, added Vitamin C, presence of undeclared fruit types, and the use of non-permitted technological processes. The outcome, a set of validated experimental methodologies will constitute powerful tools for customs and control laboratories in Europe.
