Advanced rheologic & tribologic characterisation of micro/nano scale fluid films and solid thin films.

Objective

Miniaturisation in microelectronics, microsystems and micro analytical methods in many fields increasingly need characterisation of fluid or solid thin films at micro / nano scale. Functional properties of contact surfaces are of special relevance. Material parameters taken from macroscopic measurement are not valid at micro / nano scale due to unproportional influence of surface forces and substrate microstructures. This is especially true for rheologic and tribologic properties. Despite existing needs no according measuring equipment is commercially available. The project therefore aims at developing an automated equipment for micro force µ torque measurement for analysis of nanoscale fluid / solid films and µl-scale fluid specimen. The modular system will be integrated with precision micro drives. The project includes development of calibration standards. SME proposers who are active in sensor technology and laboratory equipment expect substantial market volume from the project.
