Objective
Paints, inks, and other coatings contain volatile compounds that are harmful for humans. Although it is the policy to reduce the use of organic solvents, these materials are still in use and will remain in use for many years to come. Approximately 10 to50 million people in Europe are daily exposed to harmful solvents without protection. The objective of the project is to develop a portable detector for vapours for quantitative and qualitative measurement of unknown components present in a mixture of vapours. At present there are no such devices. The combination of a number technologies ranging from software development to materials technology by the different partners is a key element in this project. Consequently, the European multidisciplinary approach is expected to lead to new developments in sensor technology and electronics. Apart from vast commercial opportunities for the participants this project will lead to the firm establishment European sensor industry and it will have a main contribution to quality of life and health and safety of a lot of European citizens.
