Objective
To heat a group of public buildings and domestic dwellings in the town of Vicenza using geothermal energy, either directly or using heat pumps to preheat water for the district heating system.
The geological target consists of the same horizon tapped in Villaverla 1 well located 15 Km North of Vicenza. The reservoir formation composed of Cretaceous-Jurassic-Triassic dolomite and dolomitic limestone is at a depth of 2,200-2,600 m. The expected flow-rate is 100 m3/h artesian flow corresponding to a 100 D.m. transmissivity at 68 C. Forecast pump assisted flow is 200 m3/h with a 275 KW submerged pump - low salinity (< 1 g/l) could allow surface discharge and remove the need to drill an injection well.
Total energy savings are around +- 2,070 TOE/y.
The project is successful with final characteristics similar to the design forecasts.
The lithology encountered agreed with the expected geological section. The vicinity of the Schio-Vicenza regional fault does not complicate the known monoclinal structure. The above findings show that the reservoir met project forecasts. There appears to be potential for additional geothermal projects in the area. The reservoir temperature prohibits direct use of the fluid, since the buildings are equipped with radiators. Consequently, heat pumps will be used to transfer the heat from the geothermal fluid to the heat conveying fluid.
The Vicenza 1 borehole was drilled to a maximum depth of 2,150 m between July and September 1983. Drilling operations were carried out without special problems - a 13"3/8 casing was cemented to 491 m and 9"5/8 and liner installed and cemented between 437 and 1,487 with an open hole from 1,487 to 2,150 m.
The production test (November 1983) by means of air lift induced production showed the following results: flow-rate - 66 m3/h; 60 C at well head; 69 C in the reservoir; Ph 7; salinity - 0.1 g/l.
The water production is from Dolomitic limestones and Cretaceous-Jurassic-Triassic limestones. The main production zone is located in Jurassic formations.
The well, tested over several days, with a Reda pump (tubing 4 1/2") in January 1984 showed a flow-rate of 125 m3/h with a drawdown of +- 110 m and 67 C temperature at well head. Total mineral content was 0.9 g/l.
