GREENHOUSES HEATED BY GEOTHERMICAL ENERGY

Objective

Exploitation of autochthonous geothermical resources as an energy source to control the inside temperature of five hectares of hydroponic cultivation. The innovative aspects of the projects are :
- exploitation of autochthonous geothermical resources for heating greenhouses
- Heating system aimed to directly irradiate heat to the plant.
The expected energy saving is 1080 TOE/y equivalent to 84,7 Million of pesetas, and the payback time for the investment is 6,99 year.
Project started in November 95. The results of the well initially considered was positive as to location of an artesian aquifer, but negative as to its anomalous temperature, which led to change the location of the project from the Tertiary Basin of Granada depression to the neighbouring and geologically similar, Tertiary depression of Guadix-Baza, located 90 km to the north-east of the capital of Granada, where there are two unoperated geothermal wells drilled in 1991, with a geothermal conditions as required, and owned by the Local Government of Zujar.
Contact was established with the representatives of the Municipality who showed great interest and a positive institutional willingness to collaborate with Pydhesa in setting up greenhouses.
Finally, after a long process of bureaucratic formalities with the different authorities - Municipal, Local Government, state and the Hydrographic Confederation of the Guadalquivir, Pydhesa signed the contract awarding the land and geothermal resources with the Local Government of Zujar on 25th June.
The land where these greenhouses will be installed are at 1700 meters from the above-mentioned resource. Thus, technical reasons and geo-physical tests led us to the consideration of making an exploratory well in greenhouses site, in order to avoid a thermal drop on the way. This objective was accomplished and the estimated parameters obtained were as follows :
Volume of Flow (Q) (estimated during the drilling) = 50 l/s
Temperature (T) = 49°C
The execution of the project has been extended 12 months, due to the impossibility of progressing until completing the administrative formalization.
- Geothermical resources : Pydhesa investigated in the province of Granada locating a geothermical reservoir. For this purpose Pydhesa drilled two wells obtaining successful result (36-40°, sited under the Granada Basin Neogeno Postoregenic Sediments).
For the development of the demonstrative project it has been necessary to find a new location and drill a new well, due to the impossibility to buy out the areas surrounding the previous well locations. This impossibility is due to the appartenances of the land to a Partial Town-Plan of immediate approval.
- Technical conditions of the exploitation :
well :depth 880m
geothermical fluid :
* well head temperature : 40-41 °C
* type of water from physical analysis : calcium sulfated
* water salinity : 3,6 gr/l
* ordinary S.A.R. index : 1,6
* effective porosity : 0.005
* conductivity : 4,1 ds/m
Specific needs of the agricultural exploitation :
*cultivated surface : 50000 m²
*watering needs : 1,6 l/s
*geothermal needs at 40°C for heating : 80-100 l/s

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
