RECOVERY OF AN OIL WELL TO USE GEOTHERMAL ENERGY FOR GREENHOUSE HEATING

Objective

To heat greenhouses to be built with low enthalpy geothermal water. To recovery an oil well (Mios 2, drilled down to 3,700 m) in the Bassin d'Arcachon and to tap the Upper Jurassic Mano Dolomite between 1,780 and 1,835 m, and depending on the results obtained, the Purbeckian-Wealdian sandstones of the Lower Cretaceous formations between 1,701 and 1,759 m.
Estimated primary energy saving from the project is 2,955 TOE/y with a corresponding payback of 2.5 years.
After cleaning the well (Mios 2) to 1,990 m (top cement in the 9 5/8" existing casing) it was recovered between May 1983 and January 1984. Perforations were carried out at 1,731-1,743/1,778-1,782/1,850-1,859 m at the top of the Mano Dolomite and the following characteristics were recorded:
artesian flow-rate - 100 m3/h; transmissivity - 180 D.m. It was then decided, in order to produce a sufficient flow of geothermal water without pumping, to carry out additional perforations. This new set at 1,734-1,743 was successful, achieving the following characteristics:
artesian flow-rate 160 m3/h; salinity - 3.7 g/l; well head temperature - 74 C; transmissivity 290 D.m.
The geothermal water has a high H2S content.
Estimated characteristics:
a. for the Dolomite : flow-rate - 125 m3/h; temperature 75 C;
salinity - 3.5 g/l;
b. for the Sandstones : flow-rate - 100 m3/h; temperature - 70 C;
salinity - 3.5 g/l.
It is expected to produce these results by perforating the 9 5/8" casing, following logging of the uncemented sections and subsequent physical and chemical stimulation if necessary. No reinjection well is planned. The aim is to discharge the fluid on the surface at 28 C and eventually to use this residual heat for added cool greenhouses. The greenhouses are to be heated at low temperatures in the 35 C to 40 C range, by means of heat pipes backed-up by propane gas.
