THE SUPPLY OF GEOTHERMAL ENERGY TO A DISTRICT HEATING NETWORK

Objective

To heat a group of 950 dwellings and tertiary equipment by means of a district heating network which is currently being rebuilt and to supply the network with residual heat from the existing boilers. The main target lies in Dogger limestone at a depth of 1,120 to 1,220 m and has the following characteristics: net pay of aquifer - 30 m; porosity - 10%; permeability - 50 m.D.; temperature at the surface - 58 C; salinity - 6 g/l; expected flow-rate - between 20 and 60 m3/h. The profitability threshold for tapping this aquifer by means of a pair of wells is a flow-rate of 30 m3/h at 56 C. In the course of exploration an investigation of the Lusitanian aquifer lying between 875 and 940 m and having the following characteristics; net pay of aquifer - 20 m, temperature - 47 C, salinity - 4 g/l. No estimate of flow-rate is available. The distance between the wells will be 1,000 m. It is estimated that the annual energy saving will be 750 to 1,600 TOE depending on well production.
The exploration well was unsuccessful due to lack of matrix or fracture permeability in both carbonaceous explored reservoirs.
(Malm - Dogger). However it was possible to delineate the permeability boundary of the Dogger reservoir in the North East of the Isle de France.
The well was drilled to a final depth of 1,542 m between November and December 1981. From 978 m to the 1,253 m mark, 7" tubing was installed, followed by a 6" hole to 1,542 m to test the potential of the Dogger (Bathonian/Bajocian limestone) between 1,415 and 1,542 m. Characteristics:
temperature - 49 C; air-lift-assisted flow-rate - below 2 m3/h after acidification. The reservoir is impermeable, compact and composed of chalky limestone. A return to the Lusitanian (second target) oolithic limestone from 997 m to the 1,035 m mark, slightly permeable after acidification.
Characteristics: flow-rate - 17 m3/h for a drawdown of 150 m; temperature - 40.5 C; salinity - 2.4 g/l; net pay - 8 m; porosity - 14%; transmissivity - 3 D.m.; skin + 1.3.
The potential of both the Dogger and Lusitanian resource is lower than forecast as a result of the unfavourable boundary facies, which are far different from the producing facies west of Reims.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
