EXPANSION OF THE GEOTHERMAL PLANT ALTHEIM FOR MULTIPLE USE OF GEOTHERMAL ENERGY

Objective

The primary aim of the project is the protection of the environment by a large reducing of the pollution in Altheim. This reducing of pollution should be reached by a further use of geothermal energy in the field of electricity generation, fish farming and district heating.
A further aim is the strengthening of the energy supply in the view of availability and independence. With a safe, indepedent and economical energy supply, based on geothermal energy the industry will be strengthened on long time view. This will have positive effects to the economy and to the employment.
Energy savings of 1650 TOE are expected, the expected production costs are about 96 Ecu's for one MWhel and 16 Ecu's for one MWhth.

The thermal water has to be produced for the energetical use at a suitable amount, pressure and temperature. To prevent degassing, a pressure of 5 bar is necessary in the thermal water system. The present flow rate of the existing production well is about 46 l/s by artesian pressure. During a pumping test the flow rate was about 70 l/s. By using a submersible pump (pump pressure 7 bar, needed electric power about 100 kW) a max. production of about 100 l/s and a wellhead temperature of about 105 deg. C is estimated. In a first step the temperature from 105 deg. C to 78,3 deg. C (thermal power about 9400 kW) will be used for electricity production. The ORC technic is the base of this.
Geothermal water flow 81,7 kg/s
Fouling coefficient in heat exchangers 11.400 W/m2/K
Cooling water flow (nearby river) 270 kg/s
Cooling water inlet temperature 10 deg. C
Cooling water outlet temperature17,6 deg. C
Binary unit net electric output 702 kW
Energy need for secondary circuits : 190 kW; net production : 3,825.000 kWh/a.
THE FOLLOWING ADVANTAGES ARE OBTAINED : High cycle efficiency, very high turbine efficiency (up to 85%), low mechanical stress of the turbine due to the low peripheral speed, no erosion of blades due to the absence of moisture in the vapour nozzles, long life. The ORC, turbogenerator for this project utilises the field experience gained in a DG XVII previous project (GE./00210/88/IT) for a 1.3 MWel turbogenerator installed in Castelnuovo/Italy. All the equipment required for the turbogenerator to be operated is mounted on a standard 40" skid. The plant will be equipped with a comprehensive data acquisition system. The data collected by the computer can be transmitted to a remote controller by a telephone modem.
The working fluid is a new refrigerant of the hydrofluorocarbon class, that is now fast replacing the ozone-depleting CFC 22. During the thermodynamic design phase of the ORC machine, the use of a new, less pressure working fluid will be evaluated.
The proposed ORC plant can be regarded as innovative compared to existing technologies because of the following reasons : use of a new operation liquid (ODP=0), turbine fit to the new operation liquid, compact construction with help of a small vaporiser, improved monitoring system. The proposed conception for reinjection can be regarded as innovative compared to existing technologies because of the following reasons: installation of 3 API-casings in one borehole, 30" airlift drilling, drilling 10 5/8" without change of bit, opening up of Malm by airlift drilling. Fish farming at a temperature of about 30 deg. C for sturgeon, pike or shrimp will be tested and requires innovative action because of biological and hygienic reasons.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
