GEOTHERMAL EXPLOITATION FOR HEATING AGRICULTURAL BUILDINGS

Objectif

The aim of the project is to make a practical demonstration of the possibility of using a low energy geothermal store for heating glasshouses in an area not currently used for this purpose and with major potential, both geothermal and agricultural. If the experiment is successful it could act.
The relative small investments in boreholes will allow easier future development.
Since the water is low in salinity, reinjection boreholes do not need to be drilled. The geothermal water, once it has cooled, can be used for irrigation.
The presence of gas in the water (possibly H2S) will make it necessary to use special materials in piping or installation of submerged pumping. The success of the operation will allow the development of operations in other areas with similar problems of gas.
The presence of gases also rules out the use of iron piping for the heating systems. All the piping will therefore be of plastic materials, chiefly polyethylene and polyvinyl chloride.
The design of the heating circuits, the number and distribution of heating pipes by surface unit is a new, innovatory factor.
Energy substitution : 26790 Kth/y
Substituted fuel : 4049 m³/y
Innovative technology :
This is a project for a type of geothermal reservoir not currently in use in Spain and with very major potential for future development. The relatively small investments in boreholes will allow easier future development.
Since the water is low in salinity, reinjection boreholes do not need to be drilled. The geothermal water, once it has cooled, can be used for irrigation.
The presence of some gas in the water (possibly H2S) will make it necessary to use special materials in piping or installation of submerged pumping.
The heating systems to be used are :
- Flat 500 mm diameter polyethylene piping, which swells with the passage of water.
- Corrugated 32 mm diameter polyethylene piping 2 mm thick.

Context :
The presence of gases accompanying the geothermal fluid makes it necessary to select special materials to prepare the borehole. The experience gained in this field will be applied to other areas in the SE where abundant geothermal water could be exploited in the future in similar operations. Once the borehole has been recovered and the suitable materials installed the greenhouses will be installed taking into careful account the features of the energy resource : low thermal level and special water composition.
Given the characteristics of the geothermal fluid, both as regards usage temperature and the presence of gases, heating systems will have to be designed with an innovatory configuration in this field.

Programme(s)
