CASING OF A GEOTHERMAL WELL USING AN INFLATABLE COMPOSITE TUBING WITH IN SITU POLYMERISATION

Objective

The aim of the project is to realise the re-casing of a corroded well with a sleeve of a sole length upper than 1000 m and made of composite materials polymerised in-situ.
The particularity of the project consists in postponing the sleeve polymerisation after having introduced it in the ground face to the re-casing area.
This puts advantages in :
- using big length tubes wound on a reel
- possibility of re-casing a well with a tube which outside diameter is close to the internal diameter of the well to be treated.
Applied to a geothermal well, this re-casing allow :
- to save a corroded tube,
- to decrease the losses of charge and so to decrease the exploitation costs compared to a basic re-casing solution.
Considerable progress was made on a project which had enromous potential before it had to be stopped. Many technical advances were made towards putting an innovative product onto the market. A significant R&D effort is necessary to eliminate some technical difficulties which were not revealed during the previous R&D phases.
The DRILLFLEX process consists in using a tubing made of composite materials, soft and unpolymerised at room temperature, made in big length and having reduced dimensions because of a cross folding. After running-in in the well and rounded-out by inflation, the Drillflex sleeve is polymerised which gives it its final mechanical characteristics.
The programme has six phases :
1. ENGINEERING AND CONCEPTION
Specific studies and tests are necessary to adapt the acquired Drillflex technology to the realisation in big length. Studies will be done on the product measures, on its mechanical behaviour when polymerised and unpolymerised, and on the waterlightness of high and low parts.
Tests will be done on tubing of 6 to 100 meters long.
Getting old tests will be done to evaluate the time of life of the product in a geothermal environment. 2. Production will consist in manufacturing a Drillflex tubing of 2000 meters long. Several tubes of 6 to 100 meters long will allow to carry out the test of characteristics.
A 1000 meters tubing will be done in one length to be re-casing in the geothermal well.
3. SITE-PREPARATION will consist in gauging the well and in cleaning the sediments. To repair the working area a cap will be set at the end of the well.
4. IMPLEMENTATION of the Drillflex sleeve in site is decomposed in 9 phases :
- running of the Drillflex tube in the well grace to the reel,
- inflation of the tube by a fluid injection
- rising of temperature,
- polymerisation,
- drilling of the lower part,
- manufacture of the upper clamp,
- take off the cap bottom,
- control
5. COMMISSIONING will consist in putting a doublet, verifying the waterlightness and measuring the loss of charge.
6. Measures and tests will be realised in a period of 2 seasons of heating. Sensors will be positioned to controlled the product behaviour.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
