HEATING OF 1 HA OF GREENHOUSES USING A SHALLOW HYDROTHERMAL RESOURCE AT MONTBRIO (TARRAGONA)

Objective

To use geothermal energy to provide all of the heating requirements for one Ha of greenhouses. If this pilot stage is successful the project will be expanded to 5 Ha. It is estimated that a primary energy saving of 300 TOE/YR will be achieved with a corresponding payback period of 5 years.
The geothermal potential of the REUS-RONTBRIO zone appears to be as expected. The down hole temperature of 60 deg.C at 200 m depth indicates a high temperature gradient. However the diameter of the exploratory well was not sufficient, and the depth too shallow, to carry out a full evaluation of this promising geothermal field.
(Brian's note: I see that one of your keywords is Piezoelectricity. This is not the same as Piezometric which means to measure pressure or compressibility. Piezoelectricity is a voltage generated as a result of pressure in a crystalline substance. Of course I dont't know how the measurements are done. Maybe they use piezoelectric crystals (but I doubt it).)
Two wells are planned, one for production and one for piezometric control, to exploit a shallow hydrothermal resource lying at depths varying from 50 to 400m. This geothermal water has a low salt content allowing its possible use as a water supply after heat extraction. A water temperature of between 30 and 80 deg.C is expected with a flow rate of 100m3/h.
The geological conditions in this area are similar to those in another project supported by the Commission in Cataluna (see GE/523/86/ES).
The piezometric well has already been finished. It is 603 m deep and water at 68/70 deg.C has been obtained and the airlift results show a satisfactory hydraulic performance. As a consequence of this piezometric well, a production well is proposed with filters at 500/700 m. The planned site is at a distance of 300 m North-West of the piezometric well where, according to the studies, a granite region with lower depth and higher temperature and permeability should be situated.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
