The MACRO project develops a demonstrator of the telematics-based interaction between parties in clinical research: clinical trial offices which co-ordinate studies at regional, national, and European level; clinicians in the hospitals, who treat the patients and provide clinical information to the clinical trials office. The User Requirements document has attracted much favourable comment since its publication the last reporting period. It has also proved to be an extremely valuable resource during the preparation of the Technical Specifications and the Assessment Plan. A lot of effort has been spent on WP04, Technical Specifications. Four deliverables have been produced and two of these have been identified as key deliverables for this period: D04.1 Standards for Clinical Data Exchange, D04.2 Technical Specifications, D04.1, in particular, involved a considerable amount of work to investigate the relevance of current and emerging standards, mainly in relation to CEN/TC251 (Medical Informatics). From this, MACRO has produced message formats for the inter-operability of clinical data-collection systems. The Study Design Server (WP05) and the Study and Data Interface (WP06) cover the development of the central software for creating and distributing electronic forms for data collection. Prototype software has been developed by the 2 commercial partners in accordance with the technical specifications and is installed at the EORTC Data Center. MACRO offers a modular approach with clearly defined interfaces. This provides scope for standardization while still allowing the flexibility to adopt alternative modules when necessary. The Study and Data Interface implementation has attracted as a potential means of clinical data exchange between related applications.
