Dagstuhl Seminars in Computer Science

Objective

The Idea behind the Dagstuhl-Seminars: The International Conference and Research Centre for Computer Science Schloss Dagstuhl is devoted to the stimulation of research in Computer Science. The main objectives of the Centre are to support and to foster research in Computer Science on an internationally recognised level as well as to stimulate continuing education and knowledge transfer between scientists and practitioners in different areas of Computer Science. The Centre regularly organises high quality scientific workshops on special topics in Computer Science, the so-called Dagstuhl-Seminars. These Seminars are a meeting-place for scientists of an internationally approved rank in one specific area of Computer Science from all over the world. The Seminars shall contribute to the exchange of results, stimulate the communication between the scientists and inspire future research. They allow the researchers to present their new ideas and to discuss problems and future developments. Two or 3 scientists prominent in the field apply for a Dagstuhl-Seminar. The Scientific Directorate reviews these proposals and decides about the composition of the list of participants. The participation in a Dagstuhl-Seminar is only possible with a personal invitation by the Centre. The centre ensures that the participants of a seminar form a good mixture between academic and industrial scientists as well as a good balance between colleagues with a high reputation in the area and young researchers. The Seminars should not have more than 45 participants, and in most cases have between 40 and 50 participants. The Seminars usually last one week. According to the concept of the Research Centre, not only lecture and lodging rooms are available. The participants can make use of several meeting rooms, an extensive research library and well-equipped computer rooms. We add our activity report (Tätigkeitsbericht 1998) to this proposal, which shows a variety of aspects about our centre.
